Hear now the words of the witches,
The secrets we hid in the night.
The oldest of gods are invoked here,
The great work of magic is sought
In this night and in this hour,
I call upon the ancient power.
Bring your powers to we sisters three,
We want the power, give us the power!

‘Charmed’ is the story of the Charmed Ones – the most powerful witches the world has ever known, whose job is to protect the innocent. When their grandmother suffers a fatal heart-attack, Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell move back into the family manor in San Francisco, where they discover the legendary Book of Shadows hidden in the attic. Reading aloud a mystical incantation, the three sisters become imbued with Wiccan powers: Prue can move things with her mind, Piper can freeze time, while Pheobe can see the future and the past; as time passes their powers grow, and the trio are soon assigned a ‘whitelighter’ named Leo to help guide them in the use of their abilities.

Created by Constance M. Burge ('Ally McBeal') and produced by the prolific Aaron Spelling (‘Dynasty’, ‘Hart to Hart’, ‘Fantasy Island’, ‘The Love Boat’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and many, many more!), Charmed premiered in 1999, and featured Shannen Doherty as Prue, Holly Marie Combs as Piper and Alyssa Milano as Phoebe; the winning combination of such attractive actresses in the main roles, some fun – if rather light – stories and a generous dose of humour proved popular with the audience, and ‘Charmed’ was quickly seen as a success - in fact, the show was renewed for a full season of twenty-two episodes after only the first two had been transmitted! When Doherty chose to leave at the end of season three, she was killed off and replaced by Rose McGowan, playing Paige Matthews, the Halliwell’s long lost sister, half-witch and half-whitelighter. The series ran for four more years, and when it reached the end of season seven, it was given a proper ending as the cast and crew believed that, with their contracts due to end, that would be it. However, to everyone’s surprise ‘Charmed’ was promptly brought back for a final, eighth season, in which the Charmed Ones were joined by novice witch Billie Jenkins, played by Kaley Cuoco.

Although the show has now ended, the adventures of the Charmed Ones still continue in a series of novels. Who knows, the powers that be may even decide that Piper, Phoebe and Paige will return to our screens again one day…
